Left wing protesters clashed with police in Berlin as a traditional May Day demonstration came to a halt far before reaching its intended end in the city center. Some demonstrators threw stones, bottles and firecrackers at the riot police, and officers responded with charges and batons. Arrests were made. The thousands strong demonstration had set off late on Tuesday afternoon from Berlin’s neighborhood of Kreuzberg. Meanwhile in Hamburg, over one-thousand leftist activists gathered for the annual May Day protest march, local media reported. The demonstration – themed "No Alternative to Revolution" – saw protesters marching from St. Pauli to Ottensen. Right at the start, protesters threw fireworks at police officers, but the crowd remained mostly calm for the ensuing march. However, after a speech marking the end of the demonstration, violence erupted. Stones and bottles were thrown at the policemen escorting the march. Police responded employing pepper spray and arresting several protesters. Injuries were reported on both sides. www.euronews.com Germany’s jobless rate edged higher last month when adjusted for seasonal factors – such as weather. But the seasonally-unadjusted data showed that unemployment fell in April. Economists said the recent months’ steep falls in unemployment in Germany’s export-driven economy look unlikely to resume and joblessness should stagnate for the rest of the year. Seasonally-adjusted figures from the Federal Labour Office showed unemployment rose unexpectedly in April by 19000 to a total of 2.875 million. Seasonally-unadjusted data showed that unemployment fell to 2.963 million in April from 3.0 million in March. As a percentage, unemployment remained unchanged at 6.8 percent last month from an upwardly revised 6.8 percent for March. "This is a negative surprise. Economic weakness seems to be taking a toll after all. That is not unusual, as it usually takes about half a year for it to reach the labour market," said Heinrich Bayer at Postbank. "The labour market is not escaping the weak economic situation we saw over the winter," he said. Germany’s economy bounced back from the 2008/09 financial crisis but shrank by 0.2 percent at the end of last year as the eurozone’s debt troubles and a global slowdown choked exports and private consumption. Many economists expect it stagnated in the first quarter, just avoiding the two quarters of contraction which define a recession. But with the government cutting subsidies to small producers will this green revolution run out of steam? Following the Chernobyl disaster a community around Schönau in the Black Forest decided to buy their local plant and turn it into a co-operative. Now the villagers power themselves with solar or wind energy and then sell the excess to the national grid. "We started because we wanted to help, but then it became ecoomically interesting for all those who invested." After the Fukishima incident, President Merkel pledged to close the country’s nuclear reactors and naturally, this boosted interest in the Schönau scheme. However, the government recently announced a 30% reduction in subsidies to small energy producers, stifling similar green communities across the country. "The phasing out of nuclear energy cannot be achieved without subsidising renewable energy".
